NATURAL WAYS TO HELP YOU BEAT DEPRESSION

By Hannah Santenac

If you suffer from depression, it’s likely you feel utterly, desperately — sometimes unbearably — alone. It is, after all, an illness of alienation. It drags you down, steals your joy, robs you of your energy and enthusiasm, and distances you from others.
But the truth is, you’re far from alone. More than 20 million people in the U.S. suffer from mood disorders. That jaw-dropping number is proof positive that there are millions of other people who share your pain, and I’m one of them.
I suffered from depression for 16 years. Though there were times I came close to giving up, I didn't. And for those of you who feel you’re suffering alone, I want you to know that you’re not. There is help. There is hope. And there is a light at the end of the tunnel, I promise. Here’s how I found mine.
1. Be kind to yourself.
Negative self-talk is depression’s modus operandi. It’s all about hating yourself, turning your anger inward and being nasty to the most important person in your life, YOU. You’d never treat a suffering loved one that why, so why yourself? Be kind. Be forgiving. Love the wondrous creation that you are. Therapy helps here, too.
2. Get enough vitamin D.
Via sunshine, that is. There are few things that can boost a mood like a little time in the sun. Human beings were born to be outdoors, and in our overly sedentary society, we don’t spend nearly enough time in nature. Even when all you want to do is hide under the covers and cry, force yourself to go outside. It helps.
3. Eat good food.
Bad food makes you feel bad. Trust me on this. And while junk food, sugary crap and caffeine may make provide a temporary boost, they’re hurting your emotional health in the long run. Don’t worry about overhauling your entire diet immediately, but try to start making better choices.
4. Sleep.
I can’t stress this enough. I’ve learned that without proper sleep, my entire equilibrium gets screwed up. Try to normalize. Avoid electronic devices in your bedroom, go to sleep at the same time every night, and try supplements like melatonin if you have trouble falling asleep.
5. Explore holistic treatments and supplements.
While traditional medicine has its place, holistic medicine works on the mind-body connection. Holistic practitioners will look at the big picture and customize a solution via supplements, acupuncture, energy medicine, or whatever works best for you.
6. Meditate.
This is HUGE. Meditation changes your brain, and it’ll change your life right along with it. It helps to stop negative thoughts, reduces stress and heals you from the inside out. If you’re new to it, start small — a few minutes a day.
7. Lean on your friends.
Having a support network can make all the difference in the world. And while a lot of folks may not understand your suffering, I guarantee that there are people in your life who will (or at least they’ll try to). Don’t shut them out. Talk to them, share with them and reach out when you’re in despair.
8. Ask for help.
Always, always, always ask for help when you need it. It’s out there, but you have to be the one to take the first step. And the second. And the third. People want to help you, but you have to help yourself first. There are doctors, therapists, hotlines, friends, family members, support groups and countless other ways to get assistance. Explore them.
9. Avoid drinking and drugs.
Sadly, this is one of the first ways people with mood disorders tend to cope. But short term relief leads to long-term suffering. Try to cut these influences out of your life and replace them with other things on this list.
10. Move your body.
Exercise is the most underrated antidepressant. Incorporating regular activity into my routine absolutely changed my life. I’m not saying you need to be the next Jillian Michaels, but your body wants to move. It was made to move. When you’re depressed, I know it’s the last thing you want to do, and the first thing you need to do. Force yourself. Walk, run, play, skip, swim, cycle — the activity itself doesn’t matter. Pick something you don’t hate, and start moving on a daily basis as best you can.
I’m no doctor, so please, don’t forget to ask for medical help when you need it! But I am someone who’s been where you are, and this is how I got through. Hang in there, you gorgeous creature. There’s sunshine up ahead.

LISTEN TO YOUR BODY......

We hear this all the time: Listen to your body! We should follow how we feel, right? But what does this really mean? And how do we do it?

Maybe I feel like eating cookies instead of going for a run right now. Good, this is a plan I can follow! But I thought this was supposed to get me healthy. And as much as I love cookies, I'm pretty sure my cookie-tarian diet isn't going to get me there.

So now what? To what kinds of feelings am I listening? Maybe physical feelings, like stomach pain and tired feet? Or emotional feelings, like worry, doubt, or indecision?

There are two layers of feeling at work here. One is feeling in your body, your core, your nature. The other is your surface psychology, imprinted on top of it all.

Following our psychology—our mind—can certainly keep us busy. We run about collecting all kinds of information and advice. We think it's critical to proper decision-making! But sometimes the decisions don't come. We get trapped in worry, self-doubt, second-guessing. And if we do make decisions, we don't believe in them enough to let them live.

Luckily, there's this other kind of feeling. It's not paralyzing, it's activating. And strangely enough, it's a bit closer to the pain in your belly!

You've heard of trusting your gut? It's good advice! So how do you know when your gut is talking to you?

How can you tell the difference between your intuition—the part of you that creates an avalanche of healthy and inspired acts—and the part of you thinking about how to find that part of you?

Stop thinking about it, for a moment. You need to get quiet. You need to get sensitive, to you.

That feeling in your body is where you'll find your intuition, and your capability to act. You already know it's not on your shelves of how-to books, or waiting for you in the next guru-convention. So it's time to look somewhere else.

Your body is sending you messages, core, gut feelings, all the time. You don't need to reason them, logic them, or intellectualize them. You just need to act on them.

When your foot hurts, you pick it up and give it a squeeze. Stomach ache? Rest your hands on your belly. Unsure what to eat, say, work on, or create? Take a very deep breath, relax, feel, and then do it. Just like giving your foot a squeeze: don't think it, just do it.

Your body pays attention to you. It thinks you're important! If you've spent a whole lot of time ignoring how you feel, just bulldozing along - your body has probably decided you're not interested in listening to these lines of communication. It hits the mute button. That's OK, you can turn your volume back on.

Here are 3 steps to get you listening and moving easy in your body and life:

1. Slow it down.

When a submarine is running all ahead full, it can ping away with sonar, but it won't hear much of anything. It's making too much of its own noise! We're about the same.

Don't worry, you'll still be able to pick up the pace when you want. We all have plenty of practice in this department. If we want to slow down enough to hear something, we need to practice this, too.

2. Relax and breathe deep.

When you breathe normally, you don't create unusual sensations in your body, so this readily translates to virtually no sensation at all. Breathe as deep as you possibly can, even when you're not running up a mountain, and you'll have something new. You'll feel. It will be interesting!

Remember to relax. When you're stiff and tense, you'll just feel stiff and tense. You want something more than that. Use your inhales to expand and feel into everything you've got. Use your exhales to soften everything you can feel.

3. Move without thinking or deciding.

Let your breath do this for you, and practice first in your body. When you're relaxed, your inhales will give you a lift, and your exhales will make you more movable. So let it move. No decisions required, just breathe and go along for the ride.

Practice this with your body. Now practice it with everything!

Just breathe, give it time, and watch what happens. Your body is already re-wiring itself, based on exactly what you're doing, right now. You're making you!

Have fun, and make it good.

MAKE IN JAPAN

In Japanese schools, the students don't get ANY exams until they reach
grade four (the age of 10)! Why?

Because the goal for the first 3 years of schools is NOT to judge the child's
knowledge or learning, but to establish good manners and to develop their character!

Yes, that's what our scholars taught us:Manners BEFORE knowledge!

Should this method be implemented all over the world?

MAKE IN NEVERLAND

The picture shows a female red squirrel adopting an orphan baby from an abandoned nest. Although squirrels rarely interact, they learn who their nearby relatives are by hearing their unique calls. If they fail to hear a relative’s calls for a few days, they may investigate and rescue orphans.
